New York, N.Y., May 27, 2009 —Hitwise®, an Experian company, announced today that Google search properties accounted for 80.17 percent of all Canadian searches conducted in the 12 weeks ending April 25, 2009. MSN search properties, Yahoo! search properties and Ask search properties received 8.84 percent, 7.34 percent and 2.75 percent, respectively. The remaining 41 search engines in the Hitwise Search Engine Analysis Tool accounted for 1 percent of Canadian searches.

Hitwise categorizes Web sites into more than 165 industry categories and the Search Engine category came out on top, capturing 14.58 percent of all Canadian Internet visits in April 2009. The Social Networking and Forums category and Entertainment category received the next largest amount of visits. Search Engines attract a much larger share of visits in Canada than in the US or UK. Search Engines account for a 53 percent larger share of Canadian internet visits compared to the US and 22 percent larger than the UK. Social Networks, Entertainment (in particular YouTube) and web based email are also much more popular (as measured by share of Internet visits) in Canada than in the UK and US. Conversely, Adult and Shopping and Classifieds attract a much smaller share of visits in Canada than in either the UK or US.
