London sees greatest increase in used 4x4 sales
Diesel cars also in demand, with used sales up 14.3 per cent
Nottingham, UK, 24 July 2008 - Experian®, the global information services company, today revealed that Greater London saw higher increases in the sale of used diesel cars and in the sale of 4x4s (SUVs), than any other UK region in the first quarter of 2008.
The latest used car sales figures from Experian show that sales of used diesel cars increased by 14.3 per cent in Greater London while across the country, sales of used diesel cars increased by 10.1 per cent (from 463,229 to 510,027).[1]
Furthermore, Greater London was the region to see the highest increase in the sale of used 4x4s and the second highest increase in the sale of used multi-purpose vehicles – both bigger engine vehicle types.
Kirk Fletcher, Managing Director of Experian’s Automotive division, said: “Despite the threat of higher tax on cars with the highest CO2 emissions, sales of these vehicles have remained strong throughout the country. In fact, Greater London continues to be the capital of 4x4 drivers. It is also the region to continue to see some of the biggest increases in diesel cars.
“Car buyers are more aware of the cost of running a car these days and if the rapid increase in fuel prices continues, we will see a more rapid growth in the sale of alternative fuel cars. Certainly over the last couple of years, sales of these vehicles types have risen more swiftly throughout the country.”
Total used car sales in Greater London increased by 0.1 per cent, while total used car sales throughout Great Britain fell by 0.5 per cent (from 1,978,465 sales to 1,999,750 sales).
