Community Colleges Pick Experian QAS to Improve Student Data Quality

Cape Fear Community College, Niagara County Community College, Lorain County Community College and others aim to improve communication, streamline operations and reduce costs through better data quality

Boston, Mass. — Oct. 28, 2008 — Experian® QAS®, a leading provider of customer data quality software and services, announced today that, to date, 30 community colleges in North America have selected front-end address verification software from Experian QAS to improve the quality of data used in recruiting, enrollment and student communication efforts. Three signed on in September alone, and a total of 10 have come on board in 2008. With software from Experian QAS in place, admissions offices, registrars and other student services departments can operate with increased efficiency — an imperative in today’s financially strained environment.

“With shrinking budgets and growing enrollments, community colleges are more closely examining the repercussions of inaccurate contact data used in recruitment and general student communication,” said Joel Curry, chief operating officer, Experian QAS. “More and more colleges have found that address verification has a real impact on the bottom line and can maximize the communications reach to current and prospective students while minimizing the drain on financial and personnel resources.”

Cape Fear Community College saves time, money with Experian QAS
As community college enrollments surge nationwide, so does the volume of unverified student contact data flowing into campus-wide systems. School personnel are expected to do more with less, and system administrators are applying more stringent quality checks on inbound address data to reduce wasted time and money.

Cape Fear Community College chose to implement QAS Pro, a point-of-entry validation, cleansing and standardization tool for addresses, to verify all addresses entered into its Colleague enterprise resource planning (ERP) system from Datatel, Inc. The result was a significant drop in “Undeliverable as Addressed” mailings and a corresponding increase in the college’s ability to reach current and prospective students.

“We had been struggling with address quality for a number of years, and with our commuter student base, the issues kept growing. We needed a way to verify the address validity at the source, and QAS provided the solution,” said Joel Brubaker, Colleague administrator at Cape Fear Community College. “The QAS products allow us to verify all addresses at the point of entry, in real time and in batch.”

Lorain County Community College aims to eliminate human error during data entry
Lorain County Community College found that one of its greatest challenges was accurate data entry. The college recently selected QAS Pro and QAS Batch from Experian QAS to address this concern. The school intends to outfit all its data-capture systems with front-end address verification software so that each department on campus operates with clean, qualified data.

“Implementing the QAS solution will allow us to enter addresses into our system in the correct format each and every time, thus reducing the instances of bad data within our system,” said Stacy Lease, computer resource specialist at Lorain County Community College. “Having correct addresses also reduces the number of returned mail items and gets us another step closer to compliance with current postal regulations. The tool is easy to use and portable between different system types, which are very important to us as we are preparing to implement a new ERP system.”

Niagara County Community College addresses need for seamless integration across campus applications
After determining that Experian QAS software works seamlessly with all its campus applications, Niagara County Community College (NCCC) selected QAS Pro and QAS Batch for departments with address verification needs, such as admissions, the Registrar, continuing education and its business office. The school’s decision reflects its aim to reduce wasteful spending and improve communication to potential students.

“We chose Experian QAS because it will improve the quality of address information entered not only in our SunGard Higher Education™ Banner system, but other campus applications as well,” said Julie Speer, registrar at Niagara County Community College. “Also, as a part of the SUNY system, NCCC was impressed with the growing reputation of Experian QAS and its install base.”
